Health is one of the first things that concern citizens in every country, but not in the United Kingdom, healthcare there is free for all citizens. The National Health Service in the United Kingdom provides healthcare to all residents (“BBC NEWS | Health | NHS ‘now four different systems,'” n.d.). That’s the reason why having healthcare insurance is not mandatory in the UK. Taxes cover the hospital’s bills. Therefore, patients don’t pay care premiums, deductibles or additional fees for any specialist treatments. That’s why the health care system in the United Kingdom regarded as one of the best health systems in the world. However, with the start of the financial crisis in 2008, the government in the United Kingdom decided to cut spending on health care (“NPR Choice page,” 2018). This decision had negative consequences on the health system in Britain; one of the most relevant results was the high numbers of hospital’s waiting lists. Therefore, many people demonstrate to protest these decisions.
It is well worth noting that United Kingdom has struggled a lot to reach the actual health care system and despite the high-quality level that this system has achieved, it still has many weaknesses and flaws that must be adjusted to be more flexible and feasible. To my way of thinking, one of those issues that should be reconsidered is that health care should be paid through health insurance and be accessible for all citizens, just like the Nederland health system.
